MEA 101 – FUNDAMENTALS OF MONITORING AND EVALUATION
Module Objective
To introduce learners to the fundamental concepts, principles, purposes and processes of monitoring and evaluation and enable them to understand the role of MEAL within development and humanitarian programmes.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, learners should be able to:
1. Define monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning.
2. Explain the differences between monitoring and evaluation.
3. Explain the importance of MEAL in programme management.
4. Describe the programme/project cycle.

Practical Activities
Learners develop a simple monitoring checklist and monitoring schedule for a hypothetical project.
Expected Outcome
Learners will understand the basic MEAL function and be able to support routine monitoring and reporting activities.
